If whitening your teeth is on your to-do list this year, there are a few ingredients that you should be aware of. While successful in whitening teeth, some of the harsher chemicals like peroxides can cause sensitivity - one of the most common unwanted side effects of teeth whitening. So, what are the other options? Let’s dive into a few of our favourite incredible ingredients that can help to support gentle whitening and a full mouth clean.

Baking Soda
This household ingredient has actually been used for its cleaning properties for years! It works to gently polish away surface stains, to support a brighter smile. But don’t run out and use just any old baking soda on your teeth. You need a carefully concentrated formula, like Red Seal’s Baking Soda Toothpaste, to ensure the abrasivity scale meets the standards for products used in oral care.

Coconut Oil
Along with supporting hair and skin health, Coconut Oil has also been used for thousands of years to help improve dental health in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s the fatty acids in coconut oil that have been associated with having anti-microbial properties. And we all know that while we don’t like to think about it, our mouths do have bacteria in them from leftover meals and built-up plaque. And that’s just one of the reasons why it’s so important to brush your teeth at least twice a day!

Charcoal
Like baking soda, Charcoal is mildly abrasive and in turn can help support the removal of surface stains, with regular brushing. Again, it’s important to make sure that the charcoal you are using complies with the standards for products used in oral care, like Red Seal’s Whitening Toothpaste with Charcoal spheres.

Propolis
A healthy smile isn’t just about your teeth, it’s important to consider gum health too! Propolis has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, to help support healthy gums with regular brushing - we love the Propolis from New Zealand bees here at Red Seal! Just remember you shouldn't use Propolis if you have an allergy to bees or bee products.

Along with incredible ingredients like these, making sure you’re keeping up with a consistent oral care routine is important too. Don’t forget to brush in between meals, try reducing your coffee intake and limit your consumption of food and beverages that can cause stains, as much as possible - it all helps keep you smiling bright!
